Complaint of not receiving my People Magazine on April 20, 2020

My People Magazine doesn't expire until December 20, 2020 according to my identification on the magazine. When I called People, they said that the above company was the one who I needed to call, which I did. They informed me that my subscription elapsed in March, 2020. I told them that I had signed up and it was confirmed until 12/2020. The gentleman I spoke to, Brian, told me that my credit card was not approved. I told him then, why was I receiving the magazine until March 13, 2020? He didn't have an answer for me and said that some one would call me or email me. I feel I have been "had." Something is wrong with this and it stinks. Help!

How to get a refund from synapse magazine scammers

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Like everyone, I signed up for free magazine subscriptions thinking at some point I will receive some communication of a renewal and I would cancel at that time. That never happened but my account was charged.

Call 1-87*-789-**** (one of many synapse 800 numbers). You will get an automated recording. Regardless of the recording, continue to press 0 until you are connected to a live person. Say you would like the following: #1 cancel your current subscription, #2 cancel all future subscriptions, #3 cancel all trial subscriptions, and #4 a refund for the subscription charges because you did not want them renewed.

Most importantly, tell them to remove your account number from their data base and you do not want to receive magazines from synapse ever again. He will try to interrupt while you are speaking. Ask him to let you continue with what you have to say before responding. The conversation is recorded and he will have to honor all of your requests. This shady company is with the BBB because they follow their guideline but does not stop the scam.

Ask the "scammer representative" when should you expect the refund. Ask to receive confirmation that the account has been removed and get the name of the person with whom you are speaking.

I can not take credit for the information.

I got "to get a live person, press 0" from someone else's review. Feel free to share this info.

My Taste of Home subscription some how is through Synapse. I got nowhere with Juan and asked to speak with a supervisor.

They kept telling me that my subscription was cancelled, but the label says my subscriptions are for two more years--even though my subscription was cancelled. Had to request a supervisor and got a confirmation number that I will no longer receive this subscription.

Ugh. I appreciate this comment and was very direct.

Guest

I don't know where this came from but I didn't not order Guns and Ammo for $ 32 - Talked to some person from India who insisted I ordered this magazine and I assured him I did not . I requested he cancel any subscription h had in my name. This is a bunch of crap .

Guest

Thank you soooo much! This helped me a ton...

very shady, never notified that my subscription was renewed for $42... much more than I had originally paid!!

Guest

Thanks, it was a headache try to talk to a live person

Guest

These people said that since I ran a charity marathon I could chose a free magazine. They have tried to charge me $117 twice, but my cc co won't accept the charge. BUT it is causing problems with them and I and I need to nip this in the bud.

Guest

Thank you for this information. I got robbed by them for Cooking Light.

It wasn't a free sample, I just wanted to cancel my subscription and thought I had subscribed through Cooking Light.

I tried to cancel directly with Cooking Light, their website reassured me it was cancelled and I was being refunded, only for me to be hit with another charge a couple weeks later and discover that Synapse won't accept a cancellation on the magazine's own customer service portal. That is a scam perpetrated on the subscriber.

Guest

Worked perfectly! I followed these steps exactly, and they have claimed to refund my money. Thank you so much.

Guest

Thanks for this. I was able to avoid jumping through the phone hoops.

The real problem here is they promise you three months of free magazines but charge your account a month later. I demanded to have it cancelled immediately and could care less about receiving any magazines. When I signed up for the Bubble Run through ACTIVE these popup screens make you think you are helping the organization.

What a scam! I plan to cancel my debit card, as your bank could care less about helping you reverse a pending charge, if I have to avoid any more unwarranted charges.

Guest

This sadly happened to me too.

This Company Sucks!!!

I thought I had cancelled all my subscriptions but low and behold after a couple months I started getting billed again! GRRRRR!!! I called Hearst Magazines because I knew I had cancelled a Women's Health subscription because I was previously receiving Redbook and it was replaced with Women's Health. I did a quick google search and found this forum and read the comments and really didn't want to sit on hold and talk to customer service. I found the website below where you can log into your account and cancel your orders. I will be checking back to make sure they are FINALLY canceled for good now! They do give you a cancellation number to retain but I got the same number for each magazine subscription I had so I don't know how valid that number is. https://www.magcustomerservice.com/wss/

Online is Easier

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

As most of the reviewers, I felt scammed. I made a purchase from one of my favorite stores a couple of months ago, the sales lady offered me FREE magazines.

I declined, but after high pressure from her stating they were completely free, I caved and said fine. She NEVER, EVER mentioned that once the "free" issues were done, that my store credit card would be charged for renewal, nor did she give ANY information regarding cancelling these "free" magazines. I did not provide a payment method so I assumed that once the trial was done, that would be it. I haven't even read a single magazine, I put them in the breakroom at my job for my employees to enjoy, because I never really wanted them in the first place.

Today, I received an email notification that I had a bill due, but I knew I should have a zero balance. I log in and low and behold I've been charged for these mystery magazines. After contacting my credit card company, I found out the company to contact is Synapse. I did about five minutes of research online and found a web address for them where I could manage my subscriptions.

I was able to cancel all of the magazines and receive a refund within a matter of minutes. It's much easier than the experiences I've read with calling over the phone.

The website is www.magcustomerservice.com. I hope this information helps someone.

Another pissed off customer

The same scam happened to me and I have been been on the phone with Synabse for way over an hour trying to get a resolution. I was told that there would be a credit put back on my charge card but we will see if that happens. Do not give up until you talk to a supervisor. Please report to the Better Business Bureau. Demand a full refund. The process you have to go through to talk to a person is ridiculous. No one should have to go through what I have been through to get a resolution to something I never authorized to begin with. Never get involved with this company as it will only be a difficult problem for you.

Outrageous Charges -never completed signup

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Hi, I stopped the signup process when I found out it was a recurring offer.. not a one time subscription. Apparently they processed my card anyway. However months had passed before I received a magazine and I had no idea why it showed up. Despite not ordering in the first place, the company has been sending me subscriptions and charging me progressively more and more (every 6 months). I have never had any notification of "additional" or "original" charges and they slipped under the radar until today. I called the magazine directly and they were unable to stop my subscripton but were able to tell me the charges were placed by a company called SNAPS (or so it sounded). After calling my bank to prevent further charges from this fraudulent company, I tried contacting the company directly with the number listed on my statement. Interesting, they do not have their NAME show on the statement. I did reach customer service and thanks to their not being able to spell my name was eventually routed to a live person. The live person claims my 2 subscriptions have been cancelled and the most "recent" charges will be reversed. This still means about $100 for the last year and a half.

Canceling subscriptions

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

After reading several of the comments I was worried. I still don't recall how I got the subscriptions.

I did remember that my time was about up when I saw that 4 days ago I was charged for a renewal. I'm thinking this must have come from someplace I consider reputable or I wouldn't have signed up, either phone carrier or Amazon maybe.

I didn't have a number for this company but one of the magazines had included their own renewal notice. I got the name Synapse and phone number from them.

I'm pleased to report that it was very easy. I pressed 0 multiple times and was connected to a rep pretty quickly.

(more quickly than Conde Nast). The rep was very helpful, didn't pressure me to continue anything and canceled all subscriptions.

He also refunded the amount charged to my card. I'll update this review if the refund doesn't show up.

When I called, the gentleman was quick to cancel the magazines and issue a refund. We'll see.

FRAUDULENT MAGAZINE SCAM - DO NOT ORDER !

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Somehow I believed some BS ad about getting Rolling Stone and REaders Digest for only $2 each for 1-yr subscriptions.. This BS company charged my credit card on 11/15/17 and as of 12/8..

almost 8 weeks later.. NO MAGAZINES delivered.. It doesn't take 8 *** weeks to simply start a subscription.. I sent an email to their "Customer NO Service" today telling them if my credit card is not refunded immediately I would report them to the NC Attorney General's office about their fraudulent SCAM...

I didn't order the magazines for fun.. this company SUCKS and is a FRAUD!

SCAM OF THE CENTURY!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My 85 year old mother has been scammed out of $115 every three months since 08/15/2016. She swears she NEVER signed up for magazines thru this company or any other.

It is now, 12/15/2017 and I called the recording line (that you cannot speak to a human on) and did at least CANCEL the 3 magazines they said she signed up for. I cancelled them 11/08/2017 yet they deducted another $115 dollars in December 2017! We finally went and closed her bank account to put a stop to this thievery! She even occurred bank charges due to over-drafts these magazine charges on her account.

I cannot believe they have gotten away with this for so long! I have requested PROOF of her signature and ordering of these magazines. And I will turn this fraud over to the State Attorney General to pursue, and demand a refund of all the charges.

WHAT A SCAM! I hope this experience will help some one else in the future.

Unscrupulous & Deceptive - Still No Refund

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Updated by user Sep 19, 2017

It appears my threat to report Synapse to the state attorney general worked. If I'd only used this earlier...

The $164 for the 3-outstanding subscriptions that hadn't been cancelled by two of their representatives, was refunded to my checking account. A word to the wise. Those marketing ploys on the Internet that offer a year's magazine subscription for a mere $2 because you answered a survey or some such thing aren’t as sweet a deal as they appear. Let's face it, no one reads the fine print, even when it's made available to us.

And that's where they gottcha, because you've just given them permission to withdraw funds from your bank account. Did Synapse have a legal right to go into my account and withdraw funds? Probably. Chances are, I checked Accept to some lengthy set of Terms that gave them permission.

What's bothering me (in addition to the deceit of two employees) is they went into my account, withdrew funds, and didn't bother to send me a notice. Had I not balanced my check book when I did, and had funds on hand to cover their withdrawal, I would have bounced checks - at $25/$25 a pop. And you know they wouldn’t have covered those Insufficient Funds charges.

The 1-star rating will remain, even though my funds have been re-deposited, because I have no respect for this company’s practices. Unscrupulous businesses need to be called out and held up to the light of public opinion.

Original review Sep 14, 2017
0 should be a rating option. This company debited my account for 4-magazines subscriptions at the tune of $224. I spoke to two representatives, both of whom assured me that the magazine subscriptions would be cancelled and my money refunded to my account in 1-3 days. And my account was refunded 2-days later - but only for one subscription. Three weeks have passed since my initial cancellation/refund request, prompting a call to Synapse-Time for information. The representative I spoke with was unable to explain why the refunds hadn’t gone through, and he issued another cancellation/refund request with the same promise that my account would be refunded in 1-3 days. And then I called Synapse Group, Inc. at 203.595.8255. I was told that the original two employees did not have the clearance to process refunds for the other three magazines. Really? Yet they have clearance to give the customer false information? She went on to say that the original ‘inquiries’ had just been received today due to a backlog. This is truly absurd. I’m supposed to believe that the initial cancellation/refund requests have been ‘pending’ for nearly 3-weeks? Again, I received the same ‘1-3 day refund’ cut & paste response. I told her that I wanted my account refunded by the end of the business day or I would report the unscrupulous methods used by Synapse Group, Inc. to specific government consumer agencies, to which she replied that someone would be calling me today. Sure. That and $3 will get me a cup of coffee.

Free 2 month subscription scam

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I was charged over $200 twice for a free trial. I didn't catch it until someone told me to check my account. A free 2 month trial turned into a nightmare. They refused to refund anything bc I didn't catch it right away. I never received any kind of notice from them which they say I was sent. Beware of anything with the word free attached to it.
